I spent my New Years 2018 in Montevideo, Uruguay!

During my time in Montevideo, I visited Plaza de Independencia, Parque Rodo, Solís Theatre, Pocitos, the main beach in Montevideo, as well as generally wandered through the city looking for interesting places to visit. Being summer in South America, I took pleasure in my own hiding from the cold back home by spending my winter in the heat and at south american beaches or wandering the cities of Argentina and Uruguay. Below are photos of me on New Years Day in the Plaza de Independencia.

During my stay in Montevideo, I tried milanesa and chivito. I stayed in Montevideo over new years eve and discovered that this was a big family-centered day. Surrounding new years, most of the streets were empty as people were either away (locals often spend holidays in Punta Del Este) or indoors celebrating with their families or friends.
The photo below is of a small nook of my air bnb (#airbnbforthewin). I noticed that most of South America finds importance in spending time close to or in nature and homes often have many windows or patios when able.

The following photo is from the main lake at Parque Rodo. Parque Rodo was a lively place for locals to go and hangout, walk their dogs, play with children or to drink mate in the company of their friends. The most peculiar thing in this area was a skating rink – literal roller skates and 100s of people all skating together along the Uruguayan coastline.

On my last day in Montevideo, I visited Pocitos for sunset as pictured here. While at this beach, I realized that one is able to walk out very far into the water without having the water reach their stomach. Watching the sunset at the beach on my last night in Uruguay was a culminating experience for my first trip to Uruguay. #januarysummer
